If your house is always dusty, you aren’t alone. The average home collects over 40 pounds of dust every year.

That’s a lot of dust, and in addition to being unsightly, it can contribute to allergies. The dust in your house is most likely a combination of dirt being tracked in, animal dander, and carpet and clothing fibers.

So how do you handle all that dust and keep it at bay? Unfortunately, no amount of cleaning will get rid of every bit of dust in your house; but there are things you can do to reduce the amount of dust. Here’s how.

Keep Dust Out

The first step to cleaning when your house is always dusty is to keep the dust from entering your house at all. The easiest way to do this is to stop people from wearing shoes in your house. A significant amount of dust that enters your home comes in on the bottom of people’s shoes, so consider putting a mat by the front door for shoes to go in. It might be inconvenient, but you’ll be amazed at how much less dirt and dust you find inside.

If removing shoes in your house is too much to ask, place a high quality doormat at the front door and scrape your shoes thoroughly before stepping foot inside. Clean this mat frequently to improve effectiveness.

Change Your Air Filter Frequently

Dust flies around in the air before it settles on surfaces, and it can easily be circulated through your home’s HVAC system. The air filters in your system are there to trap dust particles and keep them from blowing throughout your house, but if the filters are too dirty then they’re not able to do their job. Change your air filter every 30-60 days, according to the manufacturer recommendations. If you live in a rural area or somewhere with a lot of construction, you might need to change your filter more often. Check it frequently and change it when it looks visibly dirty.

Clean and Vacuum Often

Keeping your house clean will help reduce the amount of dust that builds up on surfaces. Vacuum frequently, and make sure to vacuum your couches, mattresses, and other furniture as well. This can help reduce dust mites and keep the total amount of dust under control. If you’re having a hard time keeping the dust under control, consider hiring a professional cleaning service.
